Rita nacque intorno al 1381 a Roccaporena, piccolo borgo nel Comune di Cascia. I suoi genitori, Antonio Lotti e Amata Ferri, erano già in età matura quando si sposarono e solo dopo dodici anni di vane attese arrivò Rita, che fu accolta come un dono della Provvidenza.
La sua vita fu intessuta di fatti prodigiosi che la tradizione, più che le poche notizie certe, ha tramandato. Come in tutte le leggende, però, alla base c’è senz’altro un fondo di verità.
Si racconta che la madre, molto devota, ebbe la visione di un angelo che le annunciava la tardiva gravidanza: avrebbe ricevuto una figlia e l’avrebbe chiamata Rita. In ciò c’è una similitudine con S.
